Junior Literacy Council
The Hale County Junior Literacy Council consists of high school students who volunteer their time to assist with annual family literacy events. Volunteer hours are recorded and prove useful for service/transcript purposes.
Basic Computer Literacy: Hale County Junior Literacy Council volunteers tutor area adults in basic computer skills by reservation. Individual attention is given to the adult student’s specific area of need.
First Thursday Family Reading Night: Our family reading night partners a community reader with junior literacy readers to share selected books with families. The children, ages 4-7, wear their pajamas, bring a blanket and enjoy “bed-time” stories. Parents enjoy the stories with their children and get reading tips to help encourage reading involvement at home. Most importantly, each family receives its own free copy of the featured book.
Summer Reading Program: The Unger Library selects one month each summer to hold a daily reading program for school age children. HCLC and the Junior Literacy Council provide volunteers for this program.
Tutoring and Mentoring: Junior Literacy Council members partner with the Plainview Independent School District to provide tutoring and mentoring to local students.
