Job Readiness Training

HCLC volunteers will teach participants how to do targeted online job searches, prepare resumes and cover letters, prepare for interviews and dress for success. The program will involve mock interviews that allow participants to overcome their nervousness and hone their skills. Training is scheduled for 1-3 p.m., Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays (or by appointment if necessary) and will address the following issues:

General:

 

  • “A happy employee is a productive employee.”

  • A productive, professional and reliable employee keeps their job and gets raises and promotions.

 

Job Search:

 

  • Where can I find a computer?

  • Where do I look for an available job that fits me?

  • How do I do a targeted search?

  • What do I need to have already done: Resume, cover letter (letter of interest), list of references.

 

Resumes:

 

  • What are the basic elements?

  • How do I arrange them?

  • How do I target a specific job?

 

Cover Letters (Letters of Interest):

 

  • What are the basic elements?

  • How do I market my skills and talents in a professional manner?

  • How do I target a specific job: Find out about their company, find their website, use their own language in the actual letter.

  • How do I arrange the material?

 

Applications:

 

  • How do I fill out an online application?

  • How do I include attachments?

  • What attachments will I need?

 

Interviews:

 

  • In general, how does that process work?

  • How do I prepare for their questions?

  • What do I wear/not wear?

  • What do I bring/not bring?

  • When do I arrive?

 

Mock Interviews:

 

  • How can I practice?

  • Can I get feedback on where to improve?
